Button snakes are a very simple way to practice buttoning. They have a ribbon and a button on the end and you string pieces of fabric onto the string. I made one with different types of fabric, and now have a new one that has multiple buttons down a string for a bit more of a challenge.

The string button snake is easy to make, and all you need is some string, buttons, and felt. The first thing you do is string buttons onto the string and knot them in place at intervals with a button secured at each end of the string. You then cut squares of felt, two pieces of each color, and cut a button hole through both pieces. You could use the felt pieces without doubling them, but I have found that they are more sturdy and last longer when the button pieces are doubled. To attach the two pieces of felt, you use hot glue, and go around the button hole first and secure the two pieces together. Then you can hot glue around the edges to secure the two pieces together.

I love the fact that you have to do several buttons in order to finish the button snake, so it gets more practice in. You can watch the video on how to glue the felt together. Check out more button activities.

  1. Hi, my cousin has been diagnosed as dyslexia and he has some problems with sensory and fine motor skills. Can you suggest some activities that can enhance his ability?

  2. These buttoning activities look great! I am wondering if you have experienced the felt material overstretching so that the button holes become to big and too easy to manipulate? Would you have any suggestion for material other than felt to make these activities?
